How BAE Systems supports military veterans in building new careers

Learn how BAE Systems is helping veterans change career direction with defence industry jobs and support in engineering, project management, and technical roles.

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a daunting journey, but for veterans joining BAE Systems, it’s a path filled with opportunity, support, and purpose. As one of the UK’s leading defence companies, BAE Systems is committed to helping veterans and reservists find meaningful careers where their skills, values, and experiences can shine.

A commitment to veterans and reservists

BAE Systems has over 7,000 veterans and reservists in its global workforce, and the company has made it a priority to create roles that align with the expertise and values honed in the Armed Forces. From cyber operations and intelligence analysis to equipment manufacturing and project management, BAE Systems offers veterans a wide range of opportunities.

The company is also a proud supporter of reservists, employing over 130 in the UK alone – making it one of the country’s top employers of reservists. As part of its pledge to the Armed Forces Covenant, BAE Systems provides 15 days of special leave to support reservists in fulfilling their training commitments.

VetNet: a lifeline for veterans

At the heart of BAE Systems’ support for veterans is VetNet, an employee-led network that provides a community for veterans, reservists, and their supporters. With nearly 500 members and growing, VetNet offers mentorship, resources, and a safe space for veterans to share their experiences and navigate the challenges of civilian life.

Rebs, a Business Analyst in BAE Systems’ National Security team, is a driving force behind VetNet. After leaving the Armed Forces, she faced her own transition challenges and saw the need for a support network. “VetNet is like a ‘veteran hug’ for new and existing employees,” she says. “It’s a place where we all speak the same language, and no question is too small.” Rebs’s journey at BAE Systems is a testament to the company’s investment in its people. Initially hired as a Business Analyst, she has since earned her Business Analysis Diploma and multiple professional certifications – all funded by the company. “BAE Systems had the confidence to invest in me, and that’s been incredibly reassuring,” she says.

Mike: from battlefield to the shipyard

Mike, a Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Advisor at BAE Systems’ Barrow site, found a new sense of purpose after a long career in the army.

Since joining six years ago, Mike has thrived in his role, working on the construction of the Astute class nuclear submarines for the Royal Navy. “It’s a proud moment when you see one launched,” he says. “After my years in the army, it’s incredibly rewarding to still play a part in keeping our Armed Forces and civilians safe.” BAE Systems has supported Mike’s growth, funding his NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and helping him achieve his career aspirations.

Laura: a culture of collaboration

Laura, an IM&T Director in Portsmouth, also found a home at BAE Systems after leaving the British Army. “I missed the sense of purpose I had in the Forces,” she says. “At BAE Systems, I found that same drive and determination in the people around me. We’re all working toward a common goal, and that’s incredibly motivating.”

Laura’s role involves integrating complex systems for submarines, a challenging and rewarding responsibility that she describes as “pinch-me” moments. “I’m proud to have had an impact on projects that directly support our Armed Forces,” she says. BAE Systems has supported her professional development through leadership programs, coaching, and mentoring, helping her grow into her role and inspire others.
