Air traffic management’s contribution to climate neutral aviation
Discover how ASD and industry partners united in a landmark declaration, outlining immediate steps for a greener aviation future - including optimising air traffic management.
In a landmark Joint Industry Declaration on 10 October 2023, ASD and its partners in the aviation industry outlined how the industry is working to propel Europe towards becoming the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky to fly in the world.
The declaration highlighted the need for profound changes in aviation, emphasising the urgency to address the environmental impact of flying. A strategic roadmap, outlined in Destination 2050, includes measures such as sustainable aviation fuels and zero-emission aircraft. However, the declaration underscored the immediate impact that optimising flight operations through digital innovation in air traffic management (ATM) can have in the shorter term.
The declaration underlined the importance of digital tools and breakthrough technologies fostered by SESAR to support day-to-day operational decision-making in ATM. By maximising airspace capacity and optimising flight routes, the industry aims to significantly reduce emissions, contributing to the overarching goal of climate neutrality.
Crucially, the stakeholders involved – including aerospace manufacturers, solutions providers, airspace users, airports, and air navigation service providers – are aligned in their commitment to reducing the industry's environmental and climate footprint in line with EU climate objectives. The declaration emphasised that this transformation necessitates a collective effort, urging cooperation and investment in breakthrough innovations.
