ASD statement on Mario Draghi’s competitiveness report

We are pleased to note that the overall approach of the report is heading in the right direction and that many of the perspectives expressed by our industry over the past years – an industry of strategic importance for Europe – appear to have been considered.

The report recognises the critical role of Europe's defence industry in enhancing its defence readiness. Amongst others, it underscores the significance of European procurement from European manufacturers, advocates for greater and more strategic EU-level investment in innovation and production capacity, as well as better access to financing.

In light of the challenges associated with the European aviation sector’s ambitious net-zero roadmap – Destination 2050 – we welcome the report's proposals to support this transformation. Recognising that aviation is a particularly challenging industry to decarbonise, the report suggests that the EU develop a set of tools to facilitate this transition. This includes continuing and expanding existing funding mechanisms, de-risking investments in sustainable renewable and low-carbon fuels, and building a supply chain for alternative fuels while working to reduce the price gap compared to conventional fuels.

Horizontally, the report emphasises the need to reduce administrative and regulatory burden, particularly for SMEs (such as the sustainability reporting framework), and the importance of fostering an environment aimed at stimulating investment, innovation, and industrial growth.

These measures, combined with lower energy costs, are crucial to maintaining Europe's competitive industrial base, ensuring the continent remains at the forefront of technological advancements and security and decarbonisation solutions in today's global technology and industry landscape.

The next five years, encompassing the European Parliament and Commission mandate from 2024 to 2029, will be pivotal for ensuring Europe's sovereignty and security, as well as for its ambition to master the green and digital transition.

EU policies should support our industries so they can in turn fully play their role as a key enabler for a strong, safe and sustainable Europe.
