European aviation industry commitment on environmental and noise standards to achieve net-zero by 2050

ASD industry experts at key ICAO emissions and noise standards meeting

ASD aviation industry experts participated in discussions on ambitious global standards on emissions and noise at the ICAO CAEP meeting, balancing sustainability and innovation to achieve net-zero goals by 2050

How can the aviation industry soar towards a greener future? Key stakeholders gathered at the ICAO CAEP meeting in Montreal to continue work on ambitious global standards on emissions and noise, aiming to balance environmental goals with cutting-edge innovation in sustainable aviation.

ASD Civil Aviation Director Vincent De Vroey and ASD Civil Aviation Business Unit Chair Bertrand de Lacombe (Airbus), alongside experts from ASD member companies, participated in the first week of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) meeting held from 17 to 21 February 2025. The meeting, which took place in Montreal, focused on advancing global standards for aircraft noise and emissions, with a particular emphasis on a proposed dual stringency framework.

The ICAO CAEP is expected to agree on a new global standard that addresses both aircraft noise and emissions. ASD’s priority is an ambitious ICAO standard for CO2 emissions for new types in line with the ICAO Long Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) and our industry’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050. In this context, new noise stringencies will need to be carefully considered so that they do not jeopardise promising low carbon technologies developed by European industry.

In parallel with the ICAO CAEP meeting, ASD held discussions with the European Union (EU) delegation and European Member States (EU/ECAC, including the UK) delegations to ICAO. During these talks, ASD outlined its priorities for ICAO matters, particularly in relation to the ongoing dual stringency discussions. ASD emphasised the importance of ensuring that environmental regulations support, rather than impede, innovation in sustainable aviation technologies.

ASD Civil Aviation Director Vincent De Vroey and ICCAIA Senior Representatives Nina Brooks and Dan Carnelly also met with ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar. The meeting served to prepare for the Secretary General’s planned participation at the upcoming ASD Convention in London, where key issues in aviation and environmental protection will be further discussed.

ASD’s active participation in the ICAO CAEP meeting and related discussions highlights the European aviation industry’s commitment to driving forward ambitious environmental standards while safeguarding the development of cutting-edge, sustainable technologies.
