Decarbonising Defence
Explore carbon reduction efforts in the European defence sector and innovative solutions for a greener future in this ASD Paper.
In the face of the global challenge of climate change, Europe's defence industry, represented by ASD, is actively engaged in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the sector.
The defence sector globally is responsible for an estimated 1% of man-made GHG emissions. Initiatives include reducing emissions from operations, collaborating across the supply chain, and focusing on the full life cycle of military products.
Key technological advancements, such as sustainable aviation fuels, electric unmanned aerial vehicles, and digital twin technology, are not only cutting emissions but also providing operational advantages for armed forces.
Despite the complexity and long lifecycles of defence platforms, major European defence companies have set tangible carbon reduction targets, achieving around 10% reduction in operational carbon emissions since 2020.
Collaboration is key to success, with the industry actively engaging with governments, international forums, and industry associations to create a unified approach to technology, infrastructure, and military requirements.
