Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) Regulation

ASD welcomes the efforts of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Commission in developing the U-space Regulatory Framework, considering it a solid first step toward achieving the Digital European Sky vision by 2040.

ASD identifies critical work areas in advancing Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management, including information management, simulation and verification, integration with existing traffic management systems, cyber security, and the application of artificial intelligence.

The ASD paper also looks at the integration of U-space and traditional air traffic management (ATM) services. It highlights ongoing projects such as AURA and CORUS-XUAM, aiming to demonstrate the seamless integration of U-space services and support integrated Urban Air Mobility (UAM) flight operations. ASD calls for regulation that fosters and safeguards the development of U-space while ensuring interoperability with existing systems.

In conclusion, ASD affirms its commitment to supporting the evolution of U-space regulation, emphasising the importance of sustainable competition, routine execution of beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) missions, and a collaborative approach. ASD calls for the creation of a scalable, performance-based, and technology-agnostic U-space regulation, promoting European competitiveness in the global aviation landscape.
